Kate Winslet Checks Out ‘Impact: 50 Years of the CFDA’ Gala

Posted in Celebrities, Gossip, Hollywood, Kate Winslet

Held as part of the New York Fashion Week festivities, the exhibition opening night gala for ‘Impact: 50 Years of the CFDA’ was the place to be in New York City on Thursday night (February 9).

Held at The Fashion Institute of Technology, stars such as Kate Winslet, Rachel Roy and Catherine Malandrino shuffled inside to get an early preview of the Council of Fashion Designers of America creation.

As for what’s on display, the exhibit was put together as the CFDA asked all members – which includes numerous top name designers and celebrities – to craft personal “impact statements” and submit outfits and pictures representing their unique style.

Along with the exhibit, the CFDA milestone has also been marked with a multimedia display and a companion book featuring the works of 450 fashion designers including Diane von Furstenberg.

In the literary offering, Diane penned, “There is something magical about the way this group was founded back in 1962, in a small room off of Seventh Avenue. It was the brain trust of 20 passionate designers who were motivated to create a safe haven for the members of their community. They sought to protect and promote their own. Nearly half a century later, through triumphs and failures, with businesses made and broken, that small assemblage has evolved into a modern family of over 400 members.”

Kate Winslet has injured herself playing basketball

Kate Winslet

The 34-year-old actress was left badly bruised following the accident – which she sustained while playing with her children, Mia, nine, and Joe, six – and filming on her new five-hour long mini-series ”Mildred Pierce” has been suspended as a result.

A source told the New York Post newspaper: ”She fell after being hit by a basketball and suffered bruising that couldn’t be covered with make-up, so the entire production was halted on Monday (May 24, 2010).”

A representative for the Oscar-winning star confirmed the accident but added she is ”fine”.

Earlier this year, Kate announced she was separating from her husband of six years Sam Mendes and was reported in March to be ready to move back to the UK after a period of living in New York with the film director.

A source said: ”Kate really wants to leave the apartment. She feels it is tainted.”

Kate Winslet is being supported through her marriage break-up by Leonardo DiCaprio

The actress turned to her “Titanic” co-star when problems started to surface in her relationship with director Sam Mendes as the trio worked together on 2008 movie “Revolutionary Road” and she is said to be relying on his support to get through this difficult time.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “Leonardo and Kate have been like brother and sister since they starred in ‘Titanic’ together.”

“And since Kate’s marriage problems started, around the time they were filming “Revolutionary Road,” they’ve got closer again. Kate feels like she can tell Leonardo anything.”

“They were thrust into stardom together and were the only people who knew what the other was going through. He’s been a rock for her.”

While Kate – who is currently holidaying in Mexico with her two children, six-year-old son Joe and Mia, her nine-year-old daughter from her marriage to Jim Threapleton – has a close friendship with Leonardo, Sam’s bond with actress Rebecca Hall, 27, was reportedly the cause of many of their rows.

The director first met Rebecca in 2006 on the set of movie “Starter For 10″ – who he acted as executive producer on – and worked on two theater productions, “A Winter’s Tale” and “The Cherry Orchard,” in New York and London as part of his Bridge Project theater company last summer.

A source said: “Sam is a huge admirer of Rebecca’s work. He really worked well with her. There’s no suggestion of anything untoward but undoubtedly the friendship didn’t help mend their struggling relationship.”

It has also been claimed the end of their six-year marriage came about after a row over conflicting work schedules, with 44-year-old Sam lined up to direct the new James Bond film in London and Kate, 34, planning to star in a US TV comedy show.

The source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Sam raised several questions over whether she should be doing it, insisting she was above a TV script and it wouldn’t progress her career. Not surprisingly, Kate went ballistic.”

Kate and Sam – who married in May 2003 – announced their split on Monday (March 15, 2010) but friends claim they have been living apart for several months.

Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes have split

Sam Mendes

The 34-year-old actress split from the “American Beauty” director earlier this year after six years of marriage.

A statement from law firm Schillings said: “Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year.

The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement.”

“Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children. They ask that the media respect their privacy at this time.”

The pair have one child together, six-year-old Joe Alfie Winslet Mendes.

It is the second marriage for Oscar-winner Kate, who wed film assistant Jim Threapleton in 1998 before divorcing in 2001 – the couple had one child, nine-year-old Mia.

Kate admitted last year she decided to lay low following her Best Actress Oscar win for “The Reader” in order to spend time with her family

The “Titanic” star – who also won the Best Actress and the Best Supporting Actress awards at the Golden Globes in 2009 for her roles in “Revolutionary Road” and “The Reader” respectively – said: “I was in hiding a little bit, just doing family stuff and very little work.”

“To be honest, I felt so over-exposed this time last year with the Golden Globes and the Oscar.”

“It was fantastic and everything, but I was sick of me, let alone what other people must have felt.”

Kate Winslet ”Over-Exposed”Last Year

The actress – who picked up an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in “The Reader” and two Golden Globes for her performances in “The Reader” and “Revolutionary Road” respectively in 2009 – decided to take some time out so people wouldn’t get tired of her.

She told the Daily Mail newspaper: “I was in hiding a little bit, just doing family stuff and very little work.”

“To be honest, I felt so over-exposed this time last year with the Golden Globes and the Oscar. It was fantastic and everything, but I was sick of me, let alone what other people must have felt.”

However, Kate is ready to get back to work and presented an award at the Golden Globes ceremony last Sunday (Jan 17, 2010) and will do the same at the Academy Awards in March.

Discussing her upcoming projects, Kate is shooting a mini-series for US TV channel HBO based on the James M. Cain novel “Mildred Pierce.”

She revealed: “We’re doing it from the book, not the film version with Joan Crawford. It’s such a deliciously meaty role and we cover a lot of ground, with Mildred raising her two girls during the Depression era. She runs her own business and, of course, there are men.”

“And because it’s a mini-series for HBO we can really explore the characters and go into the kind of things you could only hint at when the film was made in 1945.”
